Dr. Siegfried Balleis - Mayor of the City of Erlangen
I was born on August 4, 1953 in Nuremberg. After attending primary school in Zirndorf, I attended the Hardenberg Gymnasium (grammar school) in Fuerth, acted as speaker of the class on behalf of my fellow students, and passed my school-leaving examinations in 1973.
I completed my studies of business administration in the economics department of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1980 with a title roughly equivalent to a master's degree in business administration. After this, I worked in the department of political and communications science under Professor Ronneberger and received my doctorate in 1983. In addition to this, I was employed by Peter W. Höffkes, who was then Nuremberg's representative in the lower house of the German parliament.
In 1984 I joined the company Siemens, gaining important private-industry experience in the sales department of the former division Transport and Public Clients (now Transport Technology). Parallel to my business career, I served as city councilor in Zirndorf and county councilor for the Fuerth region on a voluntary basis from 1978 to 1988.
Beginning on March 1, 1988, I was employed by the city of Erlangen as the head of the economics and real-estate division; beginning in 1991, I was also responsible for housing. In 1993 I was re-elected to these posts by a large majority of the Erlangen city council, and continued until April 30, 1996. On March 10, 1996, I was elected mayor of Erlangen with 52.2% of the votes cast. I have been in office since May 1, 1996.
I am currently the vice-chair of the administrative and supervisory boards of the City and County Bank of Erlangen (Stadt- und Kreisssparkasse Erlangen), chair of the supervisory board of Erlangen Public Services and Regnitz Electrical Company, spokesman of the business forum of the Nuremberg-Fuerth-Erlangen region, and chair of the Friends of the University Association.
In addition, I am on the board of directors of the Association of Bavarian Cities and Towns, and am a member of the administrative board of the counties' Joint Office for Administrative Simplification, and chair of the economic and transport commission of the Association of Bavarian Cities and Towns.
It is my stated goal to develop Erlangen into the European centre for medicine and health in the years to come.
